The Durham Ranger is one of the classic flies. Kelson attributes the Durham Ranger to James Wright but a Walter Scruton who lived in the city of Durham seems a more likely candidate as the originator of the pattern. The winging style with its golden pheasant tippet has remained popular and is still used for new fly designs today.
